Glam Alternatives To The Traditional Tiara

Simple and chic, wedding headbands come in all shapes and sizes from a delicate single narrow tiara band to a wide band for maximum impact or as multiples where the bands are separated to give a layered look on the hair. The clean and simple lines of these headbands mean that the style will not conflict with dress styles.

Variations on the simple headband style can also be found with more detailed decorations giving effects which can compliment different wedding dress styles.

But what these wedding headbands all have in common is that they are versatile hair accessories which can be worn flat to the head like an Alice band and are equally gorgeous with long flowing locks, short hair or worn in front of an up-do.

Another advantage is that the wedding headband style can be continued through from bride to bridesmaids and flower girls, just by decreasing the sizes.

Side tiaras give a bit of an offbeat feel to a wedding headdress and look great with long or short hair. Choose from flower, star, spiky, fountain, snowflake, you name it – just about every shape and size of side spray tiara can be found by doing a bit of hunting around.

Pretty, delicate, feminine and with a romantic look, wedding hair vines are such versatile hair accessories as they can be fixed practically anywhere in the hair with kirby grips - just wherever a bit of decoration is needed.

I suppose I’d call these a contemporary development of the traditional tiara – they are peaked in the centre in the same way but in a beautiful wishbone shape (I’m not sure if your wish will come true if you pull the tiara apart after the wedding though!)

There are two kinds of vintage tiara – those which have been designed from scratch with new components in a vintage style and those which have been designed and made from “found” components – vintage jewellery. The latter are very likely to be unique as the chances of finding two identical pieces of vintage jewellery in good condition is slim.

There are some very beautiful and unusual designs of fairytale crowns and tiaras to be found, with high and narrow peaks giving an almost edgy ethereal look to them, with the designs far removed from the monarchy kind of crown.

Fascinators are usually made with feathers – gorgeous for a winter wedding, but other kinds of fascinators, for example made with net, can give a striking look.

Although seemingly a bit out of vogue at the moment – fresh flowers in the hair as a garland, a side spray or a single flower will always look beautiful and I’m sure they will have their time again before long.

This is basically a large necklace worn around the head as a circlet and with a central drop like a crystal or pearl which hangs in the middle of the forehead. There was a bit of a flurry for these a year or so ago when some celebs were spotted wearing them.

For a tiara style but narrower look out for a tiara comb to wear in front of an up-do.

Other styles of wedding hair combs are numerous with flowers, or fronds, or swirls and curls – can be placed wherever the decoration is needed as long the hair will hold a comb (beware if hair is short, thin or very shiny – a comb may not stay in!)

If a comb will not hold then probably a Kirby grip will – and although the decoration on a grip may need to be smaller – this is not a problem – just use more than one if required.

Hair pins come in loads of pretty designs – and are just simply pushed into an up-do, often to provide hair decoration at the back of the head. Remember your guests will spend a long time looking at your back!

Who knows, but I’m putting my money on more and more individualistic and unusual designs, with brides to be always on the lookout for something different and possibly unique.

Brides to be who can afford a truly bespoke service can have something made for them which will be quite unlike anything anyone else will have, but for those whose pockets are not quite as deep, a simple adjustment or customization of a standard design will still provide a unique headdress personal to her and is likely to be a low cost service.

Continuing trends I think will be more gold, more real freshwater pearls, and I think we’ll soon see the beginnings of bicolour - silver and gold used together in the same piece.

Hope you have as much fun looking for your perfect headdress as I do making new designs!
