The Top 5 Favourite Celebrity Engagement Ring Styles

The summer wedding season is coming to an end and many celebrities have tried to fool us with their wedding plans. Whether it’s wearing a false wedding dress to the church like Lily Allen or having a completely secret marriage ceremony a la Daniel Craig and Rachel Weisz, we simply hate not having all the intricate details!

The Marquise Shaped Diamond RingOne thing celebs are much less coy about showing off, is their jaw dropping engagement rings so we’ve put together five of the most popular celebrity styles. Even if picking out your engagement ring is pure fantasy, who better to look to for inspiration than those with the dough. Now there’s just the small issue of persuading the other half….

Michael Douglas proposed to Catherine Zeta Jones after just 10 months of dating with a beautiful vintage, marquise shaped, 10 carat diamond set horizontally. Completely by coincidence Catherine had in fact borrowed the same ring for several events previously without Michael’s knowledge and she saw that indicator as fate that they were simply meant to be together – true romance! The ring itself was inspired by the 1920s with 28 smaller stones surrounding the large 10 carat diamond. Designed by Fred Leighton it is worth an estimated £1,25 million.

Another celebrity finger adorned with a marquise cut diamond is that of Victoria Beckham. Not quite as extravagant as that of Zeta-Jones’ but equally as breath-taking, Victoria’s ring  features a 3 carat marquise cut diamond which is flanked either side by baguette diamonds – it even has extra diamonds embedded into the ring’s gold setting.

The emerald cut diamond ring is a timeless classic as it has been the symbol affection for many famous women over the past century.  Grace Kelly was presented with a 12 carat, emerald cut engagement ring which featured baguette diamonds on each side by Prince Rainer of Monaco in 1955. At the time, the Hollywood trend for actresses was to wear large, statement rings so his gift to Grace certainly didn’t disappoint.

Another iconic woman not coy with her jewellery was Elizabeth Taylor who was known worldwide for her expensive and extravagant taste, as well as her ownership of some of the largest and most sought after diamonds. In 1956, her about-to-become-third husband, Michael Todd proposed to her with an enormous emerald cut diamond weighing almost 30 carats – a definite heavyweight in the rings category. Although, Elizabeth did get married quite a few times, so if you are superstitious perhaps this ring isn’t the ideal match for you!

It is no secret that new mum Mariah Carey has expensive taste, from crystal encrusted microphones to a private jet, so Nicki Cannon must have been shaking in his boots when picking a suitable ring for her. Opting for a one-of-a-kind 17 carat emerald diamond from Jacob and Co. seems to have kept Mariah happy as the couple celebrated their fourth wedding anniversary on the same day they welcomed their twins in to the world on 30th April. The ring has a 10 carat pink diamond to the centre with 58 pink diamonds and two half moon-cut diamonds surrounding it. At £1.63 million the ring is worth several time the average person’s house value, but there are plenty of lookalikes to be found at a fraction of the cost.

Fans of more antique, vintage styles Gwyneth Paltrow and Reese Witherspoon were both lucky receivers of Asscher-cut diamonds. Chris Martin chose a simply stunning and very unusual micro pave frame with double band for Gwyn’s diamond setting whereas Ryan Philippe went for a 1920s art deco style setting for Reese’s. At the time, Reese was overwhelmed with admiration for her ring and posed with it in several magazines, but today she has a new sparkler on her finger from beau Jim Toth and judging by the recent photographs she seems just as keen on that sparkler.

Coloured StonesAlthough they never actually made it down the aisle, the unusual pink diamond ring Ben Affleck presented to Jennifer Lopez remains talked about. The pink Harry Winston diamond was an impressive 6.5 carats and had trapezoid shaped white diamonds on each side. Because the nuptials never took place the ring was returned to Harry Winston who put it back on the block for an undisclosed amount – you might need a millionaire boyfriend if you have your eye on this ring though ladies!

A ring that has gained much publicity of late due to the Royal Wedding, the blue sapphire which originally marked Princess Diana’s engagement to Prince Charles now graces the very fashionable finger of Kate Middleton. Prince William chose to give Kate the same ring his mother had worn as a tribute to his mother and also so that there was a way Diana could be with them on their special day. The oval blue sapphire has a jaw dropping 18 carats with 14 diamonds surrounding it.  Diana actually bucked royal tradition of picking a one-of-a-kind ring and instead opted for one which was part of a widely available Gerrard Jewellers catalogue priced at £28,000.

Canary DiamondA beautiful ring to suit a beautiful lady; Seal proposed to Heidi Klum with a rare Lorraine Schwartz 10 carat canary diamond set in in yellow gold. Not the most conventional proposal, but definitely one of the most romantic, Seal asked Heidi to marry him by flying her to a glacier and proposing inside an igloo – amazing!

If you need some more ring inspiration or want to hunt down some similar styles to those favoured by the celebs why not visit Westfield London which is host to some of the best jewellery shops in London. It has 32 jewellery stores from Tiffany and Co to Goldsmith, ensuring there is something sparkly and spectacular to suit all tastes.
